Pretação: Expanding Access Through Decolonial Art and Education

A Multidisciplinary Cultural Practice

Founded in 2014 and legally established in 2017 by curator and artist Andrea Mendes, Pretação Arte e Educação is a cultural producer dedicated to connecting artistic practice, education, memory, and social inclusion. Its work is organized around four complementary areas: the management and organization of historical and artistic collections, the development and coordination of educational programs, the organization and curation of cultural events, and the professional support of artists.

Through this integrated approach, Pretação creates opportunities for research, exchange, and public engagement. Its projects include exhibitions, festivals, seminars, training activities, and initiatives that encourage broader access to cultural knowledge.

Decolonial and Inclusive Perspectives

The producer’s mission is grounded in multidisciplinary and decolonial practices. These approaches seek to question established narratives, recognize diverse forms of knowledge, and expand the voices represented in cultural spaces. Accessibility is understood not only as physical access, but also as a social, racial, and gender-related commitment.

Special attention is given to Black and Indigenous communities, LGBTQIA+ people, and people with disabilities. By placing these groups at the center of its activities, Pretação contributes to the creation of cultural repertoires that reflect a wider range of experiences. Its initiatives also foster a sense of belonging, inviting audiences to see themselves as active participants in artistic and educational processes.

A Record of Collaboration and Impact

Over nine years, Pretação has carried out 21 projects supported by cultural incentive laws at municipal, state, and federal levels. It has also developed dozens of initiatives in partnership with Sesc, Sesi, city governments, and public and private cultural institutions in Brazil and abroad.

This history demonstrates the importance of collaboration in sustaining meaningful cultural work. By bringing together artists, educators, researchers, institutions, and communities, Pretação continues to strengthen access to art and education while encouraging more plural, representative, and socially engaged cultural practices.
