Pretação Arte e Educação: Building Inclusive and Decolonial Cultural Practices

A Multidisciplinary Cultural Producer

Founded in 2014 and legally established in 2017 by curator and artist Andrea Mendes, Pretação Arte e Educação is a cultural producer dedicated to developing meaningful relationships between art, education, memory, and society. Its work is organized around four main areas: the management and organization of historical and artistic collections, the development and coordination of educational programs, the creation and curation of cultural events, and the professional support of artists.

Culture, Accessibility, and Belonging

Pretação’s mission is grounded in multidisciplinary and decolonial practices that expand access to culture and encourage critical engagement with artistic and historical narratives. The organization prioritizes social, racial, and gender accessibility, seeking to create spaces in which different communities can recognize their experiences, knowledge, and identities.

Particular attention is given to Black and Indigenous populations, LGBTQIA+ people, and people with disabilities. By valuing diverse perspectives and challenging exclusionary traditions, Pretação contributes to the formation of cultural repertoires and strengthens the public’s sense of belonging. Its educational initiatives connect audiences with collections, exhibitions, and artistic processes through dialogue and shared learning.

Projects and Institutional Partnerships

Over nine years of activity, Pretação has carried out 21 projects supported by cultural incentive laws at municipal, state, and federal levels. These initiatives include exhibitions, festivals, seminars, educational programs, and collection-based projects.

The producer has also developed dozens of initiatives in partnership with SESC, SESI, city governments, and public and private cultural institutions in Brazil and abroad. Through these collaborations, Pretação continues to demonstrate how cultural production can combine professional management with social commitment, artistic experimentation, and the democratization of knowledge.

A Commitment to Transformative Practice

By bringing together curation, education, collection management, and artist support, Pretação Arte e Educação creates projects that respond to contemporary cultural challenges while opening space for more plural and representative histories.
